Have you ever been at a place where you are overwhelmed by pressures, stresses, decisions, and all that comes with life? We are women, and so probably the better question might be – when have we NEVER been :). In most leadership journeys, there are times when it feels like ‘this is too much’, but sometimes, there is no other way but to somehow get through the situation.
For some weeks in June-July, I got to go through a Biblical soul care online course, offered via recorded lectures, that made me ponder more on how my view of leadership and work in ministry is. According to the presenter, Jesus is our role model of soul care. The presenter began by asking what emotions Jesus went through – did he have stress, anxiety, depression, worry, fear, burnout, anger? How did Jesus take care of his own soul? And how would Jesus desire that we care for our own souls? You may be familiar with the gospels to be able to recall the emotions Jesus went through, and the ones he didn’t. How did he manage pressures and stresses? The answers were – too simple :), like, regular time in the Word; time alone in prayer or solitude (away from the masses and busyness), regular fasting, fellowship with others not related to ministry (remember Jesus asking the disciples to go away with him); repentance of sin; expression of one’s emotions to the Lord (even through tears) and accountability.
So, how do you care for your soul? I have learnt that this responsibility is mine, and cannot be delegated to someone else, whether spouse or leader. As a leader – a woman leader, soul care is one of the ways to help us serve God fully and wholly, knowing that God can provide for me, just like He did for Jesus, the spiritual power I need to press on. What do you and I need to do, so that we can better care for our spiritual man? (or woman) :). The answer may not be in more time away or less work, or more off days….it may be that I need just to reorganize my priorities and my days and weeks, to intentionally care for the soul.
…I pray that out of His glorious riches, He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit IN YOUR INNER BEING….(Ephesians 3:16).
In Christ,
Anna
